The original design was a team-building exercise that encouraged people to share creative ideas in a safe environment. In his book Innovation Games, Luke Hohmann introduced the idea behind the sailboat retrospective method. What Are the Four Elements of the Sailboat Retrospective Method? That’s why the sailboat retrospective method is a valuable template to follow whenever your agile team needs help visualizing the steps that lead to victory. If your calculations are off, even by a little, someone else can steal your victory at the last second. When your evaluations are accurate, you’ve got an excellent chance to win the race. We have already used it again for a workshop. You’ll need to consider the progress you’ve made, what obstacles are in your way, and the goals you want to accomplish. The toolĪbout Boardting, the stickie tool we used: the team liked it, it was easy to use (apart from the dot voting we really did not get to work like we wanted). This retro technique helps the team focus on the future they want and how they will get there. Retros can sometimes turn into nonconstructive whining meetings. I also very much appreciate the positive switch that happens when you turn the negative anchors into something positive (the goals) and decide together on a way to reach that (the actions). The team also said that the discussions we had during the retro were great, much better than in any retro they had before.Īs the facilitator I can only agree with the team, the discussions were really good. Also, having a pretty picture to look at made the retro more fun. And that the technique helped very much with that focus. They said it was nice to focus more on the big picture and what is ahead instead of introspecting on only the last sprint. The team really liked the Sailboat retro. If your team is familiar with the tool and you don’t spend time evaluating you could probably do it in 60 minutes. We also spent some time evaluating the retro and the tool. We spent some of that time explaining the Sailboat retro technique and some additional time trying out the new stickies tool. I had booked 90 minutes for this meeting and that was a good amount of time. I copied the link to the board and sent it to the team members so they could join that board. I went into Boardthing and set the boat picture as a background in a board. I found Boardthing that seemed to fulfill everything that I needed and decided to try it out. Enabled me to set a picture as a background and the team members to put stickies on it. The team members could use without having to create their own account.I had a vision of us using an online sticky tool and putting our stickies on the picture of the boat. I read about the Sailboat retrospective and really wanted to try it, but I was not sure how I could make it work with the team being distributed. I wanted to do something different, and I wanted the retro to be as much like a live meeting as possible. They used slack video call and confluence for documentation during the meeting. My team had a history of using the 4L retrospective technique every sprint for a long time. In the retrospectives we always used video since it gives a feeling of being close to each other when being distributed. We used slack for our daily communication: text communication, audio and video calls. We were distributed in 2 locations with a 7-hour time difference. I had recently started working with a new team. How do I host a retrospective that feels like a live meeting even though we are distributed? Background

The program receives regular updates for both the paid and free versions. Additionally, the application lets you monitor the maps for tornados, storms, hurricanes, etc. It gives accurate and precise information about weather conditions in different areas around the world. MyRadar is a pretty comprehensive weather forecast app. The application gives you options for ‘Hurricane Tracker’, ‘Radar’, ‘Clouds’, and ‘Winds’. With layers on the map, you can even watch violent storms during the hurricane season. These may include tropical storms, hurricanes, etc. While the free version of MyRadar download is sufficient to track severe weather, you’ll need the paid version for detailed monitoring of natural disasters. If you turn on the button to the right, the app places a specific layer on the map. You just click on a title to dig deeper into the settings section. These include ‘Warnings and Watches’, ‘Earthquakes’, ‘Wildfires’, ‘Temperatures’, etc. In this weather tracking application, you can add a wide range of tiers to the map. Each active layer comes with a different design, focusing on multiple aspects of the terrain, weather, etc. For instance, you can click on an image at the top of the screen to shuffle between ‘Per Station’, ‘Temp Map’, ‘Hi Def’, and ‘Classic’. The powerful weather application has a dedicated layers menu, which lets you customize the user experience. From the maps tab, you can even explore Mars. The aviation charts let you track flight plans and view SIGMETs and AIRMETs. This will also get rid of disruptive advertisements. If you want to access detailed aviation charts, you’ll have to purchase the Pro version. While the ‘Gray’ map has a basic design, the other two deliver extensive views of the terrain. MyRadar comes with three primary maps, i.e., Aerial, Roads, and Gray. While similar learning tools like Stellarium and Google Earth Pro have a simple interface, MyRadar takes a different approach and bundles numerous features into a single package. You can even toggle between ‘Globe’ and ‘Flat’ views of the Earth. The program features multiple map types, which you can select from the second button in the menu bar. The cross icon instantly takes you to the current location. The weather tracking application comes with a magnifying glass, which you can use to search for a specific point in a world map. You can open a map, select a target area, and click on the arrow button to get precise information about various aspects of weather in the region. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll notice the icon bar, which works as an information hub for various categories. But once you get a hang of the interface, the software is hassle-free. MyRadar weather forecast app can feel overwhelming. For casual users, the free version will be sufficient to get timely updates about the weather. While the program is free to use, there’s a premium version with more features and content. There’s a worldwide map, which displays the animated weather radar, and shows patterns for snow, rain, sun, etc. It packs critical information and features to deliver real-time data. MyRadar download comes with various customization options. Regional maps, accurate weather forecast, and more You can also add the bird to your Life List within Merlin, or else you can save it to an ongoing checklist in the companion eBird app with just one click. Here are a couple of really cool features of Sound ID – and a stumbling block: You can save your bird recordings to a personal list that you can go back and hear, (or delete), at any time. (In some cases, you may need to go to the app in your phone’s settings to give this permission.) This first time you use the app, you’ll get “help” slides that you can read through, or just advance through with one click. (As a side note, the lab does plan to expand Sound ID to other countries.) The first time you use Sound ID, Merlin is going to ask if it’s OK to use your phone’s microphone. Next, be sure to install the suggested “Bird Pack” – the app’s name for the database of birds located in the region of North America where you currently are. Sound ID is also available for iPad if you have software version 13.0 or above. Here are some of the finer points of how to use Sound ID: If you downloaded Merlin before Sound ID was added in June this year, you’ll need to go back and update the app in the App Store or Google Play. Merlin is really good at recognizing hawks and crows even when they’re pretty far away, so there’s hope! But again, you need to be fairly close, and I hope the lab can find a way to extend the range over time. It recognizes birds in the midst of most extraneous sounds, including normal conversation, barking dogs and even lawnmowers. Unless it’s extremely noisy, Sound ID will work. Merlin works best when you’re fairly close to the birds – especially when the birds are making chip calls instead of singing. Merlin also feels like a personal tutor when you’re starting out trying to learn birdsongs, and it’s a fun and effective way to make progress no matter where you are in learning to recognize songs. Sound ID is especially useful in a dense forest and other landscapes where it’s way easier to hear birds than to see them. ( Click here for the study.) Listening to birds can be even more enjoyable if you know which birds are singing. Based on our own experiences with the app while traveling across the country this summer - plus questions from the workshop – we’re using this post to add some pointers to my “Beverly’s Basics” page here on Flying Lessons.īefore we get started, if you aren’t familiar with Sound ID, please click here for our recent post that covers how to install the app on your phone or iPad, and here for the Cornell lab’s basic tutorial.įor those of us who don’t love learning a new technology, here’s a bit of incentive: According to a recent study by the National Park Service and several universities, birdsong reduces your stress more than any other sound in nature. Right off the bat I should tell you that while Sound ID is truly amazing, it isn’t perfect. Most of our workshop attendees were new to the app and eager to learn the finer points of how to get the most out of this powerful tool. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology added sound recognition to its free Merlin ID app a few months ago, promising real-time suggestions for the songs and calls of 456 bird species in North America. Last week Anders and I did a Zoom workshop on the Sound ID feature in the Merlin app for a group of seniors in Washington, D.C. Speaking of 10,000 steps, translated to hours, that’s about what it would take for to me to learn all of the 456 species that Merlin recognizes in a snap. I’ve struggled for years just to learn the repertoires of all the sparrows and warblers. Whenever I’m outside, walking my daily 10,000 steps or sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee, I hit the green button to see who’s out there singing. ☆ Set any Sound as Ringtone, Alarm tone, Notification tone.I’m just addicted to the Merlin app’s new Sound ID feature. The birds hunt their prey from high distances in the sky and they use the sound to identify and tell the distance of their food.ĭo not hesitate, explore this fantastic sound application, and let us know what you think in comments. They can also whistle as an indication of watery areas nearby. These birds produce wheeling and whistling sounds to indicate presence of tall woods in the forest. There are different families of hawks but they have similarities in their mode of communication. During courtship, they also make a shrill chwirk, sometimes giving several of these calls in a row. It lasts 2-3 seconds and is usually given while soaring. Hawk Adults make a hoarse, screaming kee-eeeee-arr. Can be easily added to your sound device or electronic call or just use them as a ringtone. Hawk Sounds app and learn Hawk Sounds to use for your wildlife watching. They wanted weird because they were going to do really weird stuff with it. Why were they doing that and how did you react? When you released Stag as a retail font, you wrote that Esquire was really pushing you to be weird. There may be a handful of magazines and newspapers who buy it so they can look like the Guardian, but I’m hoping that, like Times New Roman, it’ll have a life way beyond the paper it was designed for. I can’t wait to see what people do to the Guardian family, when it’s released later this year. It’s really interesting to see these details taken out of context and exposed. That was drawn for tiny listings in a phone book, and then in the 1990s Rolling Stone blew it up to 800 points, until you could see the ink traps that made it work at its intended size on its intended paper. I love to see things used in surprising ways. What happens one of these controlled environment experiments gets released into the wild? Stag was released for retail purchase in 2007.Ī lot of your retail typefaces started out as commissions. As you’ve noticed, a wire can still carry more current than its rated ampacity but overloading it is risky. Therefore, it’s recommended that you use a 2.5 mm square wire for such circuits because it has a current rating of 13.5 amps, though it can handle up to 25 amps. Of course, the same wire can work in a circuit fused at 13 amperes, but that’s dangerous because it’s right on the edge. It is, therefore, used primarily in lighting systems because most of them demand up to 7 amps, which falls within the “safe zone.” This is an important aspect of any wiring system because it determines the maximum load that can be connected to the circuit.įor instance, a 1.5mm 2 wire has a standard current capacity rating of 10 amps (but it can carry up to 20 amps). The larger the cable size, the more current, in amperes, it will be able to conduct. Wire ampacity is basically the maximum amount of current that a conductor can safely handle at any given time. This system uses the conductor’s cross-sectional area (ranging from 0.5 to 2500 millimeter-square) to determine its size and ampere capacity. IEC 60228, however, is quite common and is used across most parts of the world. The sizing criterion follows the American Wire Gauge (AWG), the British Imperial Standard Wire Gauge (SWG), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 60228) systems. Therefore, it’s imperative that you understand what size cable for power points to avoid any electrical damages that might occur due to the wrong choice of wire. With every type of wire you choose, there is a variety of sizes depending on the intended purpose. So, what are the main considerations in such cases? This article aims to answer all your questions about cable and circuit breaker amperage.įrom single core to stranded wires, the electrical market has a variety of products specifically designed for your needs. As you would notice, the wire size used to supply power to your cooker is different from that used in other ordinary socket outlets. Unfortunately, many people get consumed by other design aspects that they overlook crucial electrical requirements.Īmong the most important factors in any wiring or rewiring project are electric cable sizes, ampacity, and the current ratings of the circuit breakers. Whether you’re building a new house or renovating your current home, electrical wiring will always be part of the project.
